Gallery History
The Soufer Gallery was established in November 1977 under
the direction of Mrs. Mahboubeh Soufer, with a focus on
French contemporary artists. During the 1980’s the gallery’s
emphasis shifted to French Post-Impressionists and German
Expressionists. For over twenty years this has been the
primary focus of the Gallery, specifically specializing in
the work of George Grosz. In addition to Post-Impressionists
and Expressionists, the Gallery also has a very strong
collection of the French naïve painter, Camille Bombois.
The Soufer Gallery usually displays works from its extensive
inventory holdings, and on occasion does hold special
exhibitions. These exhibitions generally focus upon a
particular contemporary artist such as Samuel Bak and
Brother Thomas. While specializing in paintings and works on
paper, the Gallery's collection also includes sculpture and
ceramics.
Rozita Shay joined Soufer Gallery in 1987 and has been
pivotal in helping Mrs. Soufer define her collection. She
has been the co-Director at the Soufer Gallery for the past
ten years. Anouk Soufer permanently joined the Soufer
Gallery in the winter of 2005 after earning a Master’s
Degree in Modern Art and working at several modern and
contemporary galleries in New York and California. She is
Assistant Director of the Gallery founded by her
grandmother.
